Two-factor authentication (2FA)

How to enable, use, and disable two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, email codes, and recovery codes.

What 2FA adds

Two-factor authentication adds a second verification step when signing in. You manage it in Settings, on the Security tab, under Two-Factor Authentication. Two methods are available, and each shows an Enabled or Off badge:

  • Authenticator app: 6-digit codes from an app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or 1Password.
  • Email codes: a one-time code sent to your email at each sign-in.

Enabling an authenticator app

  1. On the Security tab, click Enable next to "Authenticator app".
  2. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app. If you cannot scan, enter the setup key shown below the QR code manually.
  3. Type the 6-digit code your app shows and click "Verify and enable".

Enabling email codes

  1. Click Enable next to "Email codes".
  2. Click "Send code to my email", then check your inbox.
  3. Enter the 6-digit code and click "Verify and enable".

Recovery codes

When you enable a 2FA method, you may be shown a set of recovery codes. Save them somewhere safe (there is a Copy button). Each code works once, and they will not be shown again. The Security tab shows how many unused codes you have remaining.

To get a fresh set, click Regenerate next to "Recovery codes". You must enter your current password, and your old codes stop working once new ones are generated.

Signing in with 2FA

After entering your email and password, you land on the two-factor challenge page:

  • With an authenticator app, enter the 6-digit code from the app and click Verify.
  • With email codes, click "Email me a code" (or "Resend email code"), then enter the 6-digit code. There is a short cooldown before you can resend.
  • If you lost access to your app or email, click "Use a recovery code" and enter one of your one-time recovery codes (format XXXX-XXXX).

Disabling a method

Click Disable next to the method on the Security tab. You must confirm with your current password. If you cannot sign in at all and have no recovery codes left, contact support.
